We may like reading more or less, but what is clear is that sometimes it is not an option. Fortunately, for those times that we cannot read a certain text, but we can hear it, our iPhone or iPad offers to read it to us aloud. A magnificent function until we notice that the pronunciation of some words is out of tune than it should, something that has a solution. Let’s see how to add custom pronunciations in iPhone.
Pronunciations, a matter of taste
The accessibility settings of our iPhone or iPad offer us a multitude of small adjustments with which we can really change the user experience in many ways. One of these adjustments is precisely to be able to instruct the system on how to pronounce a specific word. The steps to follow are those:
- Open the Settings app on our iPhone or iPad.
- Click on Accessibility.
- Then touch on Spoken content.
- We enter Pronunciations.
- We touch the “+” in the upper right.
- In the Phrase section, we write the word or phrase of which we want to change the pronunciation.
- In the Substitution section, we touch the microphone and pronounce the word or phrase slowly and clearly.
- We choose one of the different options.
- We touch OK.
In step six, after writing the word or phrase. We can touch the Play button in the upper right to hear the original pronunciation. Again, after completing all the steps, we can touch this same button to appreciate the difference and make any changes if necessary.
As for the replacement options, which appear at the bottom of the screen, let’s give them a quick review:
- Languages: we select the languages for the substitution or we touch All to apply it universally.
- Voices: we select which voices the substitution is applied to, by default it applies to all of them.
- Ignore capital letters: we deactivate this option if we want the case of the original sentence to be respected when deciding whether to apply the substitution.
- Apply to all apps: we deactivate this option and select the apps we want from the list if we only want these apps to replace the pronunciation we are configuring.
It is important to bear in mind that these pronunciations are synchronized between our different devices, so it will not be necessary to repeat the process on our iPhone or iPad.We can activate the reading of the screen content in Settings> Accessibility> Read content.
Finally, and just as a reminder, let’s see how to ask our iPhone or iPad to read us a text. The easiest way to do this is to enable Read Screen in step three. This will allow us that when we slide two fingers from the top of the screen down (just as we would invoke the notification center) the device begins to read the text we are seeing.
