How to charge an Apple Pencil

The process to charge an Apple Pencil will depend on whether it is first or second generation.

Apple offers two different generations of Apple Pencil, which are compatible with different iPads. Since they both run on batteries, they are inevitably going to run out of power. Here’s how to properly charge your Apple Pencil.

How to charge a first generation Apple Pencil

The first-generation Apple Pencil is compatible with all iPads that ship with a physical home button and a Lightning port.
Take your Apple Pencil and remove the cap from the top of the pencil. You will now see a lightning connector at the end of the Apple Pencil.

Insert this connector into the Lightning port on the bottom of your iPad. You will hear a sound and the Apple Pencil will begin to charge.
Keep the Apple Pencil plugged in; a full charge takes about 15 to 30 minutes.

If you don’t like charging your Apple Pencil with your iPad, you can use the Lightning adapter that comes in the box with your Apple Pencil.

How to charge a second generation Apple Pencil

Apple improved the charging experience with the second-generation Pencil, being compatible with the new iPad Pros and iPad Air. These iPads have flat edges and do not have physical home buttons.

The second-generation Apple Pencil magnetically snaps to the side of the iPad as it has a single flat edge along with a programmable button. And this is all you have to do to pair and charge your Apple Pencil.

Place your Apple Pencil on top of your iPad and you will see a poster charging.
